Tamil cinema is arguably the biggest regional film industry in the country. Thanks to the strong Tamil diaspora in the Middle East, Singapore and Malaysia, Kollywood films regularly generate substantial numbers in overseas markets. With crowd-pullers like Rajinikanth commanding enormous fan bases, the ceiling appears incredibly high. However, there is one major milestone the industry is yet to conquer: the coveted ₹1,000-crore mark. Despite its massive reach and star power, no Tamil film has breached the four-digit worldwide gross so far.
Pioneered by the one and only S.S. Rajamouli, the ₹1,000-crore figure was once an almost unimaginable target for Indian cinema. However, his uncompromising vision and ability to mount larger-than-life epics have made the landmark achievable. Kannada cinema, an industry considerably smaller than Kollywood in terms of scale, achieved the feat with KGF: Chapter 2. Several major Indian industries have since entered the ₹1,000-crore club, making Tamil cinema’s absence from the list increasingly noticeable. The pressure to deliver a four-digit grosser has consequently grown with every major pan-Indian release.
KFI’s Only Unchecked Box
With big names like Lokesh Kanagaraj and Rajinikanth attached to recent ambitious projects, Tamil cinema has come close but remains short of the milestone. Shankar’s 2.0 (2018), which reportedly grossed over ₹800 crore worldwide, continues to stand as one of the industry’s biggest commercial achievements. Lokesh Kanagaraj attempted to push the boundaries further with Coolie (2025), but the film ultimately fell short of the ₹1,000-crore target. Now, the spotlight has shifted to Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer 2, which carries enormous expectations as the next major Tamil film with the potential to challenge that benchmark.
Can Thalaivar Do It?
A direct sequel to the blockbuster Jailer (2023), Jailer 2 has generated substantial buzz among cinephiles, with Rajinikanth returning as the central attraction. The reported presence of Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi has further amplified the anticipation and given the sequel a broader pan-Indian appeal. A thunderous opening is expected given the franchise and Rajinikanth’s star power, but reaching ₹1,000 crore would require much more than a massive first weekend. The film will need exceptional word of mouth, a sustained theatrical run and, crucially, a strong performance in the Hindi market. If those factors fall into place, Jailer 2 could emerge as Tamil cinema’s next serious attempt at breaking the four-digit barrier.
